Septic Systems Care

Recommended Best Practices

  • Pump the septic tank regularly. Most residential systems should be pumped every 2–3 years, depending on household size and water usage.

  • Use water efficiently. Spreading out laundry, fixing leaks promptly, and installing water-saving fixtures helps prevent system overload.

  • Be mindful of what goes down the drain. Avoid flushing wipes, paper towels, feminine products, grease, food scraps, medications, or harsh chemicals.

  • Protect the drain field. Do not park vehicles, place structures, or plant trees or deep-rooted plants over septic tanks or drain fields.

  • Direct water away from the system. Ensure roof gutters, sump pumps, and surface drainage do not flow toward the septic area.

  • Avoid excessive use of chemicals. Strong cleaners, antibacterial soaps, and additives can disrupt the natural bacteria that help the system function properly.

  • Watch for warning signs. Slow drains, sewage odors, gurgling pipes, or wet areas in the yard may indicate a problem and should be addressed promptly by a licensed professional.

  • Keep records. Maintain documentation of inspections, pumping, and repairs for future reference.

Septic systems are the responsibility of individual homeowners. These best practices are provided for general educational purposes and do not replace professional or regulatory guidance.
